"2 States" movie review !!!
Stars – Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh, Ronit Roy, Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy
Story -- Chetan Bhagat
Chetan Bhagat’s ’2 States’, is depicted on big screen with elan by debutant director Abhishek Varman. The story is something often seen by the audience in many a Bollywood movie, but herein lies the twist; while others had angst and tragic ends; this one is quite a happy movie with lots of funny anecdotes and romance.
Our Hero Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) is a Punjabi guy from Delhi while the heroine Ananya Swaminathan, is a pure Tamilian from Chennai. The two meet at IIM-Ahmedabad, fall in both lust and love, are trying to get married. But like every love story it isn't a cakewalk. They now face a Herculean task because they’re from 2 different states. The two decide to approach each other’s family and convince them. Moreover, they also have to make their family love the other party’s family. There’s plenty of dynamics between South Indian vs North India. There is a ton of ladai-jhagda between the in-laws due to the cultural mismatch between Chennai and Delhi. While Krish’s mom Kavita (Amrita Singh) presents and produces most of the Punjabi witty fun, Ananya’s mom and dad (played by Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy respectively) present disciplined Madras.
Arjun’s performance surprises us in a big way. Instead of the same angry young man act, which we have seen in his earlier flicks, he is feasibly calm, composed and shows a lot of patience in his act. He makes his character stand out without flashing an oil-slick torso. Alia is once again brilliant in her act. She carries the emotions with ease and her expressions speak more than her words.
The best is the supporting cast which is actually the backbone of this flick. Amrita Singh is brilliant as a chirpy mother. Ronit Roy, who is a strict father of Arjun Kapoor plays the stereotypical North Indian drunkard father once again. He overshadows with his act. Shiv Kumar and Revathy are subtly effective.
Abhishek Varman efficiently narrates in this Chetan Bhagat’s book ’2 States’ adaptation. He brings out the varied emotions from his characters which are mirror image of today’s families and couples. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is delightful. While all the songs look beautiful onscreen, the background score touches your heart with each scene.
What appeals the most is, all those who have read the book ‘ 2 States’ would actually be in for a surprise as the film has been pictured exactly the way the readers must’ve visualized while reading the book.
Truly a must watch for all.
